New Study Results: Estrogen Use and the Risk for Blood Clots and Strokes Among Transgender Women

The Fenway Institute has partnered with the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to inform clinicians and transgender women about the results of a recent PCORI-funded study on heart health when using estrogen.

The study found that transgender women taking estrogen for gender affirmation had a higher risk of stroke and blood clots than cisgender women and cisgender men, with the highest risk differences seen several years after starting estrogen. Two new Evidence Updates—short two-page summaries of the study and its findings—include practical information for both clinicians and for transgender women on how to keep the heart healthy and monitor risk during and after estrogen use.
